Irvington is centered on the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Washington Boulevard. The area was originally part of Mission San Jose but during the Gold Rush, the town of Irvington developed around the prominent intersection of the main road between Oakland and San Jose and the road between Mission San Jose and Warm Springs Landing. Today this intersection is known as the "Five Corners" intersection of Washington and Fremont Boulevards and Bay Street. The two-story brick building known as Clark Hall on the corner of Fremont Boulevard and Bay Street is the oldest documented commercial building in Fremont. It was erected in 1876. The Hirsch Building was built in 1897 by Joseph Hirsch, who at the time had a general store. Over the years the lower floor was home to general merchandise, plumbing, grocery, and hardware stores. The adjacent two-story brick building known as Clark Hall on the corner of Fremont Boulevard and Bay Street is the oldest documented commercial building in Fremont. Together, the two buildings help define the character of Five Corners and the Irvington District. Mark Hirsch, a descendant of Joseph Hirsch, has a legal practice in the district today. Irvington has many antique shops and restaurants, many of which were established in the late 1800s. The neighborhood was named after Irvington, New Jersey, the birthplace of a local railroad executive at the time. The neighborhood is ethnically mixed and is primarily working class. The local high schools are Irvington High School, Robertson High School and John F. Kennedy High School. The Irvington district has two main neighborhoods: Irvington Woods and the Irvington Square. ![]()
Sal Ciubancan is the broker owner of CENTURY 21 Banner Realty. He is a resident of the East Bay and came to Fremont from Romania in 1991. After obtaining his real estate sales license he immediately went to work for CENTURY 21 Banner Realty. He trained himself on sales techniques, technology and the subtleties of real estate with books and tapes in the office. Not even a year in the business later he listed the most expensive home in Fremont, which at the time was priced at $750,000. He listed and sold that home quickly, and established himself in the high end market which at that time started at $250,000. When Ciubancan was given the opportunity to take over the brokerage in 1992, he gladly accepted. He has been successfully managing the business since then. |
